The International Rose Test Garden is a living garden and historic landmark that displays over 10,000 roses. Located on the grounds of Washington Park near downtown Portland, Oregon, this internationally famous garden was created to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties.

Today it continues its original mission for developing more beautiful roses through research and plant breeding programs.

History

The garden is now owned by Portland Parks and Recreation, which also operates as a public rose nursery. Today, volunteers introduce new roses to test for hardiness and disease resistance in this 4.5-acre site. The garden features more than 10,000 plantings with over 610 different types of roses.

The garden is open to the public and has become a popular tourist destination. It hosts more than 700,000 visitors each year.

There are free public tours of the gardens every day in the afternoon from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
