Transformation Over The Years

In 1931, the museum moved into its current location at SW Park Avenue and Jefferson Street. This was an effort to raise awareness for the museum and its collection, which had grown over the years

The museum initially started with only a collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. Today, the museum has a collection of over 42,000 pieces. In addition, it is notable for its collections of modern and contemporary art, Native American art, Asian and American art, paintings, prints, and drawings.

The museum has grown to be one of the most popular museums in the country, hosting more than 380,000 visitors annually.

Galleries And Exhibits

The Museum, a collecting institution, devotes a majority of its gallery space to its permanent collection. However, it’s also known for its unique exhibits and intimate exhibition series, such as the APEX program, a modern art series, and displays in the Gilkey Center galleries.

It also houses the Northwest Film Center, a regional media arts organization established in 1978 to promote the study and appreciation of moving picture arts. Film and video exhibits and education and knowledge services are also available at the Center.
